Lionel Messi has returned to Inter Miami training after recovering from the disappointment of Argentina's defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, but the club is taking a cautious approach over his return to competitive action.

The 39-year-old Argentine captain joined his teammates at the club's training facility in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Wednesday, 10 days after the World Cup final.

Before returning to the United States, Messi spent nearly a week in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina, with his family. During the tournament, reports emerged that his father, Jorge Messi, had been unwell. While in Rosario, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner also attended a match involving one of his family's local clubs.

Despite Argentina's heartbreaking defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, Messi enjoyed another remarkable tournament, scoring eight goals and providing four assists. In a message shared on social media after the final, he admitted the pain of the defeat would take time to heal, while thanking his teammates for their fight and supporters for their unwavering backing.

Although Messi has resumed training, Inter Miami are unwilling to rush him back into competitive football. Head coach Guillermo Hoyos said the club would manage the veteran forward's workload carefully following the physically demanding World Cup campaign.

As a result, Messi is set to miss matches against Chicago Fire and CF Montréal, as well as the MLS All-Star Game.

Inter Miami will next face Columbus Crew in MLS on Saturday, followed by a Leagues Cup clash against Atlético San Luis on August 5. However, the club has yet to confirm whether Messi will be available for either fixture.
