Messi scores four as Inter Miami crush Montreal 7-1

Lionel Messi rolled back the years with a stunning four-goal performance as Inter Miami thrashed CF Montreal 7-1 in Major League Soccer on Saturday (August 29), ending a five-match winless run across all competitions.

The victory was Miami’s first in MLS since July 25 and moved the Florida side to 42 points from 22 matches, keeping them second in the Eastern Conference, 10 points behind leaders Nashville SC.

Messi opened his account from a free kick in the 40th minute after Casemiro had put Miami ahead with a header. Fabian Herbers briefly levelled for Montreal in the 37th minute, but Messi’s deflected free kick restored Miami’s lead before the break.

The Argentine superstar produced the goal of the night in the 52nd minute, weaving past several defenders before finishing into the far corner.

He then turned provider in the 80th minute, setting up Luis Suarez with a superb lobbed pass for Miami’s third goal. Three minutes later, Messi completed his hat-trick with a delicate chip over the advancing goalkeeper.

Alexander Shashoua added Miami’s sixth in the 89th minute before Messi completed his remarkable night with another free kick deep into stoppage time.

The four-goal haul marked the ninth time Messi has scored at least four goals in a professional match. He also moved to 18 MLS goals this season, taking him to the top of the league’s scoring chart.

At 39, Messi continues to produce decisive performances, with his latest display combining spectacular finishing, individual brilliance and creative playmaking.
