Messi silences critics after guiding Argentina to another World Cup Final
Lionel Messi delivered a pointed response to critics after inspiring Argentina to a 2-1 victory over England, sending the defending champions into a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final.
The Argentina captain produced two assists in the semifinal at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, playing a decisive role as La Albiceleste moved within one win of retaining the world title.
Speaking to TyC Sports after the match, Messi dismissed suggestions that Argentina's sustained success had been a matter of fortune, insisting the team's achievements were the result of consistency, sacrifice and quality.
"People should enjoy this moment. What this team has achieved is incredible. We're in another World Cup final. We've been world champions for four years. We are the best team in the world—whether people like it or not. None of this happened by chance, and nobody gave us anything."
The 39-year-old described reaching his third World Cup final—after 2014 and 2022—as a remarkable milestone, while highlighting the resilience of a squad that overcame injuries and doubts throughout the tournament.
"Many people didn't believe in this team, but I always knew what these players were capable of. Even with injuries and difficulties, everyone gave everything. That's what makes this group special," he said.
Reflecting on the victory over England, Messi called it "more than just another win," saying the players understood how much the result meant to Argentine supporters.
Argentina will now face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, aiming to defend their crown and lift the trophy for a fourth time.
