Lionel Messi’s stunning goal was not enough to earn Inter Miami a win as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Nashville SC in a crucial Major League Soccer clash on Saturday (September 13).

Nashville took the lead in the fourth minute through Sam Surridge before Miami levelled in the 19th when Reid Baker-Whiting turned Messi’s corner into his own net.

Messi then put Miami ahead in the 62nd minute with a brilliant curling left-footed strike from outside the box, leaving the Nashville goalkeeper with no chance. It was his 19th league goal of the season and his 99th for Inter Miami across all competitions.

But Surridge struck again in stoppage time to rescue a point for Nashville. Miami came close to snatching a late winner when Rodrigo De Paul’s effort hit the post.

Miami dominated possession for much of the match, controlling nearly 60% of the ball and creating several attacking opportunities, but they could not hold on for all three points.

The draw left Miami nine points behind Nashville. Nashville lead the standings with 54 points from 25 matches, while Miami have 45 from the same number of games.
