Messi-less Miami storm into Leagues Cup quarterfinals
Inter Miami booked their place in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals with a 3–1 win over Pumas UNAM on Thursday morning, despite Lionel Messi missing the game due to a hamstring injury. Pumas struck first through Jorge Ruvalcaba in the 34th minute, silencing the home crowd early.
Just before the break, Rodrigo De Paul equalized with a composed finish after chesting down a cross from Luis Suárez. It was De Paul’s first goal for the club and gave Inter Miami a crucial boost heading into halftime.
In the second half, Suárez put Miami ahead with a calm Panenka-style penalty in the 56th minute. Ten minutes later, he set up Tadeo Allende for the third goal, sealing a well-earned comeback victory.
Coach Javier Mascherano praised his team’s response and leadership in Messi’s absence. With the win, Inter Miami advances to the quarterfinals, set for August 19 or 20, while Pumas exit the tournament.
