Lionel Messi marked his return from injury with a goal as Argentina wrapped up their World Cup preparations in style, defeating Iceland 3-0 in an international friendly on Wednesday (June 10).

The reigning world champions dominated proceedings at John Hare Stadium in the United States, delivering another polished display just days before the start of their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

After a controlled first-half performance, Argentina extended their lead in the second half, with Messi making an immediate impact following his introduction from the bench. The Argentine captain calmly converted a penalty after Lautaro Martínez was brought down inside the box, adding his name to the scoresheet in his first appearance since recovering from injury.

Lautaro later sealed the victory with Argentina’s third goal, capping off an impressive team performance that showcased the side’s trademark quick passing, fluid movement and dangerous counterattacking play.

The margin could have been even greater had Lautaro Martínez and Alexis Mac Allister capitalised on additional clear-cut opportunities late in the match.

Messi’s goal also carried added significance ahead of the World Cup. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner already shares the record for most penalty goals in World Cup history, having scored four spot-kicks during Argentina’s triumphant 2022 campaign in Qatar. One more World Cup penalty goal in 2026 would see him claim the record outright.

The victory concludes Argentina’s pre-tournament preparations on a high note and provides a significant confidence boost for Lionel Scaloni’s side.

Argentina will begin their World Cup title defence on June 17, when they face Algeria in their opening match at Kansas City Stadium.
