Lionel Messi will pull on the sky-blue and white shirt for the last time at the Estadio Monumental tonight, ending a 20-year relationship with Argentina's home ground when the World Cup winners take on Benin in a friendly.

The match kicks off at 5am (Bangladesh time) on Wednesday. For the 85,000 fans expected inside, the scoreline will matter far less than the farewell.

Messi's story at Argentina's national stadium began in 2005, when he was 18. His international debut against Hungary lasted barely a minute before he was sent off. He recovered quickly. Argentina beat Peru 2-0 at home in his first full international appearance, and from there the Monumental became one of the most cherished venues of his career.

The numbers reflect that bond. Messi has played 28 matches at the stadium, and Argentina have not lost any of them. He has scored 19 goals and provided 11 assists there. He has not scored more at any other single venue.

The captain, now close to 40, has long since completed the career he spent years chasing. After the heartbreak of the final defeat at New Jersey, he considered retiring from international football, then returned and led Argentina to the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, ending the nation's wait and the one major gap on his résumé.

Tonight's occasion is as much emotional as sporting. A generation of Argentines grew up watching him dribble past defenders, and many will say goodbye to a part of their own lives with him. Benin will provide the opposition, but the real opponent is time.

The Monumental is expected to ring with chants of his name when the whistle blows. Even in farewell, Messi's story is unlikely to be over. Some players retire, but their legacy does not.
