Messi's magic powers Inter Miami past San Luis in Leagues Cup

Lionel Messi marked his first start since the FIFA World Cup in spectacular fashion, scoring twice and providing an assist as Inter Miami defeated Mexican side Atlético San Luis 4-2 in their Leagues Cup.

The Argentine superstar returned to the starting lineup after making a substitute appearance in Inter Miami's 2-2 MLS draw against Columbus Crew last weekend, where he failed to score.

Messi's brace also saw him become the all-time leading scorer in Leagues Cup history, taking his tally to 14 goals since the tournament adopted its current format in 2023. He surpassed Denis Bouanga's previous record and has now scored multiple goals in five of his 12 Leagues Cup appearances.

Inter Miami endured an early setback when David Rodríguez put San Luis ahead in the fourth minute. Messi responded swiftly, equalising seven minutes later with a stunning volley from an Allen cross—his first goal for the club since the 2026 World Cup.

Telasco Segovia gave Miami the lead in the 26th minute before Messi doubled his tally with a composed finish to make it 3-1 before halftime. Mikael added a fourth in first-half stoppage time, heading home from a Messi corner.

San Luis pulled one back through Rafael Lorente after the break, but Miami remained in control despite a weather delay caused by heavy rain in Florida.

The victory gives Inter Miami a strong start to the tournament ahead of a high-profile clash with Mexican giants Monterrey on August 9.
