Messi's record-breaking free-kick puts Argentina in command against Jordan
Lionel Messi once again stole the spotlight on the World Cup stage, scoring a stunning second-half free-kick to guide Argentina into a commanding 3-1 lead over Jordan while setting another milestone in his remarkable career.
The defending champions dominated proceedings from the opening whistle and took the lead in the 19th minute through Giovani Lo Celso, who capped off a fluent attacking move with a clinical finish.
Argentina doubled their advantage just before halftime after Julián Álvarez was brought down inside the penalty area. Lautaro Martínez calmly converted from the spot to make it 2-0, opening his scoring account in this year's tournament.
Jordan responded after the break when Musa Al-Taamari found the net in the 55th minute, reducing the deficit and briefly reviving his side's hopes of a comeback.
However, Argentina restored control in spectacular fashion 13 minutes later. Awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty area, Messi stepped up and curled a trademark left-footed effort into the top corner, leaving the Jordanian goalkeeper rooted to the spot as Argentina stretched their lead to 3-1.
The strike also saw the Argentine captain achieve another historic milestone, becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup matches, adding yet another record to his extraordinary international career.
Argentina remained in complete control throughout the contest, enjoying the lion's share of possession while consistently creating chances through their slick passing and attacking movement. Jordan threatened on a handful of counterattacks, but Messi's brilliance effectively ended any hopes of a sustained comeback.
At the time of writing, goals from Giovani Lo Celso, Lautaro Martínez and Lionel Messi have given Argentina a comfortable 3-1 advantage over Jordan, with the reigning world champions firmly in control of the match.
