Meta launches first stand-alone AI app

Meta, the social media platform, introduced its first stand-alone AI assistant app, providing users direct access to its generative artificial intelligence models, posing a challenge to ChatGPT.

“We’re launching the first version of the Meta AI app: the assistant that gets to know your preferences, remembers context and is personalized to you,” the company's CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog post on Instagram on Tuesday. "The stand-alone app will be available on both iOS and Android platforms."

Meta competes with OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Google in the consumer AI space, reports Barron's, an American weekly magazine and newspaper.

According to the company, the app is powered by its Llama 4 AI model and includes a “Discover” feed, where users can share how they are using AI with other people. The app also includes a voice conversation feature, allowing users to use AI while they are traveling or multitasking.

In September 2023, the company released AI functionality across its apps, including WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, calling it Meta AI.
