Mexico has been gripped by violence since the 'most wanted' drug leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho', was killed in a security operation.

Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera reported that violence has broken out in at least 20 of the country's 32 states. At least 25 members of Mexico's National Guard have been killed in the violence.

The BBC reported that El Mencho died in custody shortly after being arrested by Mexican special forces on Sunday (February 22). After news of his death spread, extreme unrest and chaos erupted across the country.

The United States and Mexico had been trying to capture El Mencho for several years. There were multiple arrest warrants against him on charges of organized crime and drug trafficking. The US government had announced a price of $15 million on his head.

Mexican Defense Minister General Ricardo Trevilla said that as part of the intelligence operation, a close associate of El Mencho's "romantic partner" was identified. The movement of the associate led the forces to confirm that El Mencho was staying in the Tapalpa area of Jalisco under special security.

On Friday, the associate went to the complex with one of El Mencho's girlfriends. The next day, when the girlfriend left, special forces concluded the operation. The operation was carried out jointly by the Mexican army, National Guard and Air Force. Six helicopters and additional special forces were deployed in the border states.

During the operation, El Mencho tried to escape twice with two bodyguards. He was eventually captured, but died on the way to the capital, seriously injured.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), led by El Mencho, is known as one of the most dangerous criminal organisations in Mexico. After news of his death spread, members of the organization went on rampage in various cities.

Roads were blocked with nails and iron bars. Buses and other vehicles were set on fire. Banks and local businesses were also set on fire in many cities.

The government has deployed additional troops to control the situation and security has been beefed up on major roads.
