Mexico book Round-of-32 spot with hard-fought win over South Korea
Mexico became the first nation to secure a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in Group A at Estadio Guadalajara. Following their opening 2-0 win over South Africa, the hosts moved to six points from two matches, guaranteeing a top-two finish in the group.
The decisive moment came five minutes into the second half when midfielder Luis Romo capitalised on a costly error by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu to score the only goal of the match. The goal proved enough for Mexico, who once again relied on defensive discipline and tactical organisation to get the job done.
Despite enjoying only 45 percent possession, Mexico were more clinical in key moments. South Korea controlled 55 percent of the ball and finished with 11 shots compared to Mexico’s eight, but managed only two efforts on target. Mexico registered three shots on goal and made the most of their limited chances.
South Korea also earned six corners to Mexico’s four and pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages through captain Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in, but Mexico’s defence stood firm to secure a second consecutive clean sheet.
The match was fiercely contested, with Mexico committing 14 fouls and South Korea 12. Both teams battled intensely in midfield, but the hosts showed greater composure when it mattered most.
The victory not only sends Mexico into the Round of 32 but also strengthens their status as one of the early contenders in the tournament.
South Korea, meanwhile, remain on three points and will need a positive result in their final group match to keep their knockout hopes alive.
