Michael crosses $1 billion, makes box office history
The Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael' has crossed $1 billion at the global box office, making it the first biopic in history to achieve the milestone. The film has earned $371.8 million in North America and $629.8 million internationally, bringing its total to $1.001 billion.
Released by Lionsgate in North America and Universal Pictures internationally, the film received mixed reviews but resonated strongly with audiences. In its opening weekend, it earned $97 million in the US and $217 million worldwide, breaking the record set by 'Straight Outta Compton' (2015). It has now surpassed 'Bohemian Rhapsody' (2018), which earned $911 million, as the highest-grossing music biopic of all time.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Jaafar Jackson, the pop icon's nephew, in the lead role. Lionsgate has already announced plans for a sequel.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chairman Adam Fogelson said the audience response proves Michael Jackson's popularity remains strong and the theatrical experience continues to draw viewers.
