Millions rally across US in ‘No Kings’ protests against Trump
Millions of people across the United States (US) took to the streets on Saturday (March 28) in nationwide “No Kings” protests against President Donald Trump, expressing widespread discontent over his leadership and policies.
Throughout the day on Saturday, demonstrations took place in nearly every major US city, including New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles. Protestors lined the steps of the the Lincoln Memorial and packed the National Mall in the capital.
Organisers said nearly 8 million people participated in demonstrations spanning all 50 states, marking one of the largest protest movements in recent months.
The “No Kings” campaign, aimed at opposing what critics describe as Trump’s authoritarian approach to governance, has gained momentum since his return to office for a second term in January 2024.
Protesters accuse Trump of attempting to exert undue influence over the judiciary and administrative institutions—moves they argue resemble monarchical control.
Many of the protesters hold signs calling Trump a "fascist" and a "war criminal", as well as calling for his impeachment and removal from office.
In some cities, people are holding signs protesting against the war in Iran and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in neighbourhoods.
Demonstrators also voiced concerns over several key policies, including mass detentions and deportations of immigrants, restrictions on abortion rights, and environmental measures, which have fueled growing public anger.
Similar protests were held in October last year, though this year’s turnout was reportedly higher by around one million participants.
The protests came at a time of heightened geopolitical strain involving the United States, Iran, and Israel, as the situation continued to ripple through multiple Middle Eastern countries.
