Miraz creates history with landmark WTC double in Darwin Test

Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has entered the record books in the World Test Championship after becoming the first Bangladeshi cricketer to complete the double of 100 wickets and 1,000 runs in the competition.

Miraz reached the milestone on Sunday (August 16) during Australia’s second innings in the Darwin Test when he dismissed captain Pat Cummins. The landmark capped a superb all-round performance in which the 28-year-old has made a significant impact with both bat and ball.

Miraz had already contributed a valuable 65 with the bat in Bangladesh’s first innings, helping the visitors post 426 after bowling Australia out for 198. Bangladesh subsequently secured a commanding 228-run first-innings lead.

With the ball, Miraz removed Steven Smith late on the third day before striking three times on the fourth morning, dismissing Alex Carey, Beau Webster and Cummins. His spell kept Bangladesh firmly in the hunt for victory despite Australia’s fightback.

Miraz is only the fifth cricketer to achieve the 100-wicket, 1,000-run double in the World Test Championship. India’s Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, Australia’s Pat Cummins and England’s Chris Woakes had previously reached the landmark.

He is also Bangladesh’s second bowler to take 100 WTC wickets, after left-arm spinner Taijul Islam reached the mark earlier. Miraz’s achievement, however, is distinguished by his contribution with the bat as well.

The all-rounder has now taken 223 wickets in 59 Tests, including 14 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket match hauls. He has also scored 2,296 runs at an average of 24.17.

His latest milestone adds another chapter to an increasingly influential Test career, with his Darwin performance once again underlining Miraz’s value as one of Bangladesh’s most dependable all-rounders.
