Missile strike hits major LNG facility in Qatar
A missile strike has hit one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export facilities in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, causing extensive damage but no confirmed casualties so far.
Fires broke out in multiple sections of the facility following the strike and spread rapidly, reports Al Jazeera.
Qatar has held Iran responsible for the attack carried out in the early hours of Thursday (March 19).
State-owned QatarEnergy said emergency response teams were immediately deployed to contain the damage and manage the situation.
Earlier, Qatar’s Ministry of Defence said missiles launched from Iran targeted Ras Laffan Industrial City, widely regarded as the world’s largest hub for LNG production and export.
The Ministry of Interior said the fire at the site has been brought under initial control and no casualties have been reported so far.
QatarEnergy also confirmed significant damage to its Pearl GTL (gas-to-liquids) facility, adding that the situation is being closely monitored.
