Bangladesh has witnessed a steady decline in both mobile phone and internet subscribers over the past seven months, according to data from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

In June, 2024, the number of mobile subscribers reached to 196 million, but by January, 2025, this had dropped to approximately 186.6 million. Mobile internet users also declined by 13.2 million, from 129.2 million in June to 116 million in January.

While broadband subscriptions have slightly increased, overall internet subscribers fell from 142.2 million to 130 million.

Operators attribute the downturn to rising living costs, increased taxes, economic challenges, and political instability.

Economic strain has made consumers hesitant to invest in mobile services, with higher taxes, including a 5% rise in supplementary duty, increasing costs for SIM cards and services. Political changes and the departure of key figures have further impacted mobile usage.

Grameenphone and Robi have reported lower spending per subscriber, with Grameenphone's average monthly spend dropping from BDT 161 to BDT 148. Experts warn that the decline in subscribers could impact Bangladesh's digitalization efforts, emphasizing the need to address economic and political challenges.
