Modi is calm, steady, and a total killer; I am not like that: Trump
Just moments before sitting down for their first bilateral meeting in over a year, US President Donald Trump showered praise on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He described Narendra Modi as calm, steady, and a "total killer." Trump made these remarks about Modi during a luncheon for world leaders at the G7 summit.
According to the Indian media outlet India Today, Trump's statement makes it clear that despite tensions in India-US bilateral relations, the personal chemistry between the two leaders remains as intact as before.
It is speculated that Trump's warm comments about Modi could help break the ice in the relationship between the two leaders. Just the day before, on Tuesday, clear signs of tension in the bilateral relationship were evident during discussions between the two leaders. They were even seen limiting themselves to just a formal handshake instead of Modi's trademark warm hug.
However, the scene on Wednesday was completely different. Praising Narendra Modi's calm and steady demeanor at the gathering of world leaders, Trump said, "I am not calm or steady like Prime Minister Modi, and he is a total killer. Just look at him."
This is not the first time Trump has used the term "total killer" to describe Narendra Modi. He had previously used the term to indicate Modi's astute and tough negotiating skills.
Earlier, during a podcast ahead of the 2024 US Presidential Election, Trump used this term for Modi for the first time. At that time, he said, "Modi is a good friend of mine. He is a wonderful man. On the outside, looking at him, he seems like your own father. He is a very pleasant man, but at the negotiating table, he is a total killer."
