Modi unlikely to attend G7 summit in Canada
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to attend the G7 summit scheduled to take place in Alberta, Canada, from June 15 to 17, The Times of India reported on June 2.
Canada, which is hosting the summit this year, has yet to formally extend an invitation to Modi. However, even if one were to arrive, it is considered unlikely that the Indian Prime Minister would travel to North America at this time—particularly given ongoing tensions related to the activities of Khalistan separatists and uncertainty about how the newly elected Canadian government will address India’s concerns on the issue.
A spokesperson for the Canadian G7 team declined to confirm whether Modi would be invited, according to the ToI report by Sachin Parashar. In the event of a last-minute invitation, Indian officials are expected to find it difficult to respond favorably, due to logistical challenges, potential protests by separatist groups, and already strained bilateral ties.
This would mark the first time since 2019 when the summit was hosted by France—that Modi will miss the annual gathering of the world’s most advanced economies. His presence at past summits has been seen as a reflection of India's growing global stature.
Canada has not yet released the official list of invited leaders. However, local media reports suggest that invitations have been extended to the leaders of Australia, Ukraine, South Africa, and Brazil.
