US President Donald Trump has called for American involvement in the selection of Iran’s next supreme leader, saying he does not accept the potential candidacy of Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ali Khamenei.

In an interview with Axios on Thursday (March 5), Trump said, “Mojtaba is not acceptable to me. We need someone who will bring peace and prosperity to Iran.”

The remarks come amid speculation over Iran’s leadership following the reported death of Khamenei in a joint US-Israel strike last Saturday.

Mojtaba, 56, is closely linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps but has never formally held any state position.

Trump drew parallels with recent US involvement in Venezuela, noting that American forces recently removed President Nicolás Maduro and collaborated with a new government to secure the country’s oil reserves, claiming around 80 million barrels were acquired.
