The Nigerian government has announced that more than 300 armed bandits and kidnappers were killed during a two-day military operation in the northwestern state of Zamfara. Security forces claimed this success after launching a raid on a major bandit stronghold in the Gummi Local Government Area.

Zamfara State Information Commissioner Mahmud Muhammad Dantawasa stated in a declaration that over 300 terrorists were killed in the operation on Saturday (July 11). According to him, this marks a significant milestone for the government in restoring law and order.

Citing local residents, the news agency AFP reported that around 1,000 armed bandits rustled cattle on Wednesday night. Following the incident, the military and local vigilantes launched a joint operation. Local resident Abubakar Muhammad claimed that more than 300 bandits were killed during intense clashes that lasted through the night and into the following morning.

According to residents, the military had attempted to raid the same stronghold about two weeks ago. However, the security forces were forced to retreat at that time due to the overwhelming number of bandits.

Nigeria's northern and central regions have been unsettled for many years by the activities of armed bandits, kidnappers, and militant groups. These groups engage in cattle rustling, kidnapping, and attacks, as well as extorting money from farmers. In many instances, they attack agricultural lands and destroy crops.

According to security analysts, communication and cooperation between criminal gangs and jihadist groups have increased in recent years. Taking advantage of weak administrative control, they are expanding their influence across various areas. In the northeast, Nigerian security forces have long been fighting militant groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP. According to government data, nearly 200 militants, including a top Islamic State leader, were killed last May in an operation conducted with assistance from the United States.

Meanwhile, incidents of kidnapping and ransom demands have risen at an alarming rate due to poverty, a weak law enforcement system, and the dominance of armed groups. In particular, the abduction of students from educational institutions has become a major security concern.

On Saturday, the Nigerian military further stated that they also suffered some casualties during an operation to rescue more than 40 children from the clutches of jihadists. The incident took place in the southwest, triggering fresh concerns, as the region had previously been considered relatively safe.

According to analysts, while this latest operation is a positive development for the government, significant challenges must still be addressed to ensure permanent peace and security in Nigeria.
