Morocco edge Scotland 1-0
Morocco claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Scotland in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C match, with Ismael Saibari scoring the only goal of the game just 71 seconds after kick-off on Saturday.
The Atlas Lions caught Scotland cold right from the start. Brahim Díaz slipped a clever pass into the channel, and Saibari timed his run to perfection, finishing calmly from the right side of the box to give Morocco an early lead. It was the fastest goal of the tournament so far and stunned the large contingent of Scottish supporters who had turned the stadium into a sea of tartan.
Scotland, who had beaten Haiti in their opening match, responded with character. They gradually worked their way into the game, with Lyndon Dykes and Scott McTominay offering a physical presence up front. John McGinn and Lewis Ferguson battled hard in midfield to regain control, but Morocco’s well-organised defence, led by the likes of Achraf Hakimi, proved difficult to break down. Bono, in the Moroccan goal, remained alert to deal with any threats.
Morocco continued to pose a danger on the counter-attack throughout the first half and into the second. Players such as Bilal El Khannouss and Neil El Aynaoui showed flashes of quality, while substitute Chemsdine Talbi added fresh legs and pace when introduced.
As the second half progressed, Scotland pushed forward in search of an equaliser. They enjoyed spells of territorial dominance and created several promising moments, particularly through Dykes’ hold-up play and crosses from the flanks. However, despite forcing a number of corners and putting pressure on the Moroccan backline, the finishing touch continued to elude them.
The game reached a dramatic climax in stoppage time. In the 90+6 minute, Morocco broke at pace once more. Talbi found El Aynaoui in space, but the midfielder smashed his shot wide of the target. Scotland immediately went forward again. Dykes won a vital corner, sparking huge noise from the passionate Tartan Army. Lewis Ferguson swung the ball in, but it was cleared away. As Scotland tried to regain possession, Anthony Ralston was penalised for a foul, and the referee blew the final whistle.
The result leaves Morocco with four points from their two matches, while Scotland sit on three points. Both teams remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages ahead of their final group games.
Scotland showed plenty of spirit and organisation, particularly in the second half, but lacked the clinical edge needed to convert their pressure into goals. Morocco, for their part, were clinical when it mattered most and defended resolutely to secure a valuable three points.
