'Mothers are not meant to be celebrated just for one day'

When Mother's Day arrives, the environment becomes charged with emotions. Everywhere, stories of a mother's sacrifices abound. Social media is filled with numerous posts celebrating mothers, affectionate comments beneath pictures, and special features in mainstream media, all contributing to a unique atmosphere. The market is adorned with cards, flowers, gifts, and various events aimed at bringing joy to mothers. Mother's Day holds significant importance as it serves as a reminder of our love and responsibilities towards our mothers.

However, the issue lies in the fact that we often impose invisible expectations on mothers throughout the rest of the year. We tend to forget that a mother is not just a figure for one day; she is a part of our lives every day, every moment.

When asked to depict a 'good mother', we often envision a simple, indifferent, selfless, and colorless individual. To us, a mother's selflessness implies that she will forgo her own wants and needs for the sake of her family and children, yet she seldom expresses her own desires.

Have you ever pondered why a mother is perceived as colorless? Why is it deemed unacceptable for a mother to be joyful? Does motherhood necessitate a loss of vibrancy? Is motherhood solely about sacrifice, responsibility, and silent exhaustion? Does it require a mother to suppress her own desires, colors, and dreams, living solely for others? We often confine mothers within a specific framework—where they may laugh, but not too loudly; dream, but not for themselves; be vibrant, but not in a way that draws attention.

Just as a mother loves her child, she is a complete individual in her own right. She possesses her own preferences, desires, joys, and sorrows. Just as she brings color to the lives of others, her own life deserves to be vibrant as well.

Societal pressures have instilled in mothers the belief that ‘To be a good mother, one must forget oneself.’ However, the reality is that a mother can best care for her family by nurturing herself, not by losing her identity.

Being a mother does not mean being exhausted. A mother is also an individual. Mother must be made to understand that she is not colorless, she is the brightest color of life. She must be cheerful, because a mother's smile lights up the world.

On this Mother's Day, let us not only give space to the story of mother's sacrifice, but also to her smile, her color, her dreams. Tell her that - 'You are not just a mother, you are an individual person yourself. Your happiness is equally important.'
