Multi-storey building collapses in New Delhi, students trapped under debris

A multi-storey building has collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of southwest New Delhi, India's capital. Several students and other individuals are feared trapped under the debris. Police, fire service and other rescue teams are conducting operations at the scene to rescue them .

The Delhi Fire Service received information about the building collapse in the Jewellers area on Pyarelal Road around 1:30pm local time on Sunday . Firefighters quickly arrived and began rescue operations, with at least 12 fire engines deployed. Heavy machinery is being used to clear the debris in an effort to rescue those trapped alive .

The collapsed building is reported to have housed paying guest accommodation for students . According to local sources, several students trapped under the debris have made phone calls seeking help. Rescue workers have also heard cries and pleas for help from beneath the rubble .

Delhi Police have confirmed that at least two people have been rescued so far. However, the exact number of people in the building at the time of the accident has not been confirmed. Locals believe several dozen students and other residents may have been inside . The building, identified as a five-storey boys' hostel named 'Hostel Daze', was located near Delhi University's South Campus, an area with many student PGs and hostels .

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is monitoring the situation at the site. She has stated that the rescue operation is being carried out with utmost priority to rescue those trapped . As a precautionary measure, an adjacent building has also been evacuated .

Delhi Fire Service Divisional Officer Ramgopal Meena said demolition work was ongoing at the building at the time of the collapse. The building was very old and dilapidated . According to eyewitnesses, the building collapsed while a basement was being constructed and the lower floors were being renovated. The pillars at the bottom were reportedly weak, despite the upper structure being reinforced .

The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be determined. An investigation is expected to be launched to ascertain the cause of the accident. Meanwhile, search and rescue operations continue to confirm if anyone else remains trapped under the debris .
