Mumbai on high alert after bomb threats ahead of Ganesh festival
Panic gripped Mumbai on Friday after police received a chilling threat warning of multiple bomb attacks across the city. The threat, delivered via a WhatsApp message, claimed that “human bombs” had been planted in 34 vehicles, sparking a massive security operation ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
According to NDTV, the message was sent to the WhatsApp helpline of the Mumbai Traffic Police control room. In response, security across the city has been significantly heightened, with law enforcement agencies deploying additional forces and stepping up surveillance.
The threat message originated from an account named “Lashkar-e-Jihadi” and alleged that 14 terrorists from Pakistan have entered India. It further claimed that 400 kg of RDX explosives would be used in the planned attacks—an amount that, the message suggested, could kill up to 10 million people.
A senior Mumbai Police official confirmed the receipt of the threat and said all necessary precautions were being taken.
“We are treating this threat with the utmost seriousness. Security has been increased across the city, and we are conducting thorough checks in all public and sensitive areas, including parking lots and basements,” the official said.
The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has also been alerted and is actively investigating the matter alongside local law enforcement.
In a press briefing, another senior official assured citizens that Mumbai's security apparatus is well-prepared to handle any threat.
“Our forces are capable and ready. Preventive measures are being taken citywide, and no area is being left unchecked,” he stated.
Amid the heightened tensions, police have urged the public to remain calm and not to spread or believe in unverified rumors that have surfaced since the message was circulated.
As the city prepares for the Ganesh festival—a major Hindu celebration that draws large crowds—officials are urging vigilance and cooperation from the public to ensure safety for all.
