Colombia took a deserved 1-0 lead into the break against World Cup debutants Uzbekistan in their opening Group K match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico City.

The breakthrough came in the 40th minute when defender Daniel Munoz finished brilliantly from close range after meeting a dangerous delivery from Luis Diaz inside the penalty area. The goal capped a dominant first-half display from the South American side, who controlled possession and created the better chances throughout.

Returning to the World Cup after missing out on Qatar 2022, Colombia looked determined to make a statement. Captain James Rodriguez dictated play from midfield, while Diaz repeatedly troubled the Uzbek defence with his pace and direct running. Colombia came close to opening the scoring earlier when Diaz struck the post during a sustained spell of pressure.

Uzbekistan, making their historic World Cup debut, showed discipline and defensive organization under coach Fabio Cannavaro but struggled to establish any attacking rhythm. Led by captain Eldor Shomurodov, the Central Asian side attempted to threaten on the counterattack but found Colombia’s backline difficult to break down.

The match carries added significance in Group K after Portugal and DR Congo played out a 1-1 draw earlier, leaving a valuable three points on offer for the winner. With Colombia enjoying most of the possession and creating the clearer opportunities, Nestor Lorenzo’s men head into the second half in control.

However, Uzbekistan remains within touching distance, and a single goal deficit leaves the World Cup newcomers with every chance of mounting a response after the break.

For now, Munoz’s clinical finish is the difference as Colombia moves 45 minutes closer to a winning start to their World Cup campaign.
