Myanmar formally recognizes 309,000 Rohingya as residents of Rakhine
For the first time, Myanmar has officially recognized approximately 309,000 Rohingya refugees sheltered in Bangladesh as former residents of Rakhine State. The Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that these verified individuals will be repatriated once the security situation in Rakhine improves.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 308,975 displaced persons taking refuge in Bangladesh have been confirmed through a verification process as former residents of Rakhine State. This recognition by Myanmar is being viewed as a significant development in the long-standing Rohingya repatriation efforts.
The ministry stated that the verified former residents will be accepted back into Myanmar once the security situation in Rakhine State stabilizes further. However, no specific timeframe for the repatriation has been announced.
Previous bilateral initiatives between Bangladesh and Myanmar to initiate Rohingya repatriation have failed to succeed. Large-scale repatriation has not been possible due to concerns regarding security, citizenship, and fundamental rights. Additionally, the ongoing conflict between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army in Rakhine has further complicated the situation, with a large portion of the state currently under the control of the Arakan Army.
The predominantly Muslim Rohingya minority in Myanmar has long faced discrimination, persecution, and statelessness. A massive influx of Rohingya fled and sought refuge in Bangladesh following a brutal military crackdown and violence in 2017.
Currently, over 1.3 million Rohingya are sheltered in Bangladesh, with many living in camps in Cox's Bazar and Bhasan Char for years. At the same time, many continue to attempt dangerous sea journeys to reach countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia.
Bangladesh has maintained from the outset that Rohingya repatriation must be voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable. Meanwhile, the Rohingya refugees have also been demanding the guarantee of citizenship recognition, safety, and fundamental rights before returning to Myanmar.
