NASA has sent the official ball of the 2026 FIFA World Cup into space. The initiative aims to highlight the connection between space research, technology and sports, while inspiring a new generation to engage with science, the US space agency said.

According to NASA, the scientific knowledge and technology gained through space exploration play a crucial role not only in space but also in sports science and everyday life. The ball was sent into space to deliver that message to football fans worldwide.

NASA shared a video of the event on social media platform X, stating that the initiative is intended to help the younger generation understand how space exploration drives innovation in sports science and daily life.

As part of NASA's World Cup programme, a special exhibition is running at the FIFA Fan Festival in Houston from June 11 to July 19. The exhibition highlights research conducted on the International Space Station (ISS) and the Artemis programme aimed at sending humans to the Moon.

Research conducted on the space station for over two decades has made significant contributions to sports science, particularly in analysing football aerodynamics and ball movement. In a 2019 study conducted in the microgravity environment of the ISS, scientists examined how the distribution of mass inside a ball affects its motion, spin and stability. The findings have helped deepen understanding of how modern technology, including electronic sensors embedded inside the ball, impacts ball performance during matches.
