NBR extends deadline for January 2026 Online VAT returns

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting online VAT returns for the January 2026 tax period to February 22, 2026.

The extension aims to facilitate taxpayers in filing returns through the e-VAT system in the public interest.

According to an NBR notification, continuous public holidays due to Shab-e-Barat and the 13th National Parliamentary Election disrupted normal business operations, preventing many institutions from submitting returns on time.

Additionally, the e-Challan system’s OTP server was temporarily down on February 15, causing technical difficulties and further delaying online submissions.

Citing these circumstances, NBR invoked its powers under Section 64(1A) of the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act, 2012 to grant the additional time. The board emphasised that the measure ensures VAT-registered individuals and businesses will not face penalties due to delays beyond their control.

NBR officials said the extension will help taxpayers complete their submissions smoothly despite the disruptions. All VAT-registered entities are urged to submit their January 2026 returns by the revised deadline to avoid legal fines.
