NCP calls for election in February to ensure national stability
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has urged that the upcoming national election be held in February to maintain political stability in the country.
Speaking at a briefing in Dhaka’s Banglamotor on Sunday (November 2), NCP Convener Nahid Islam said the party is preparing for the polls and will finalise candidates for all 300 constituencies this month.
He alleged that one political group is using the referendum as a political tool, while another is obstructing the reform process. “The decision on the referendum will be made by the government and the Election Commission,” Nahid said, adding that disagreement among parties undermines national consensus.
Nahid noted that the NCP views reform and elections as separate processes and will not form alliances with groups opposing reforms. He accused some parties of betraying the nation by signing the July Charter without genuine intent.
He added that the NCP supports the provision in the first draft of the implementation order requiring constitutional inclusion of reforms after 270 days but may reconsider its position if that clause is altered.
Nahid also criticized the Election Commission for creating obstacles instead of assisting new parties, saying the NCP still prefers the Shapla Koli symbol granted recently.
