Ndoye Doubles Switzerland's Lead Against Algeria
Switzerland doubled their advantage over Algeria within a minute of the restart, striking again in the 46th minute to lead 2-0 in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash at BC Place.
The early second-half blow came moments after the interval, catching Algeria cold just as they had begun to find their rhythm in the closing stages of the first half. Dan Ndoye was on target for the second, doubling Switzerland's lead just a minute after the restart. Breel Embolo had given Switzerland the lead in the 10th minute, converting a swift counterattack set up by Johan Manzambi, and the Swiss have now struck twice without reply.
Despite trailing by two, Algeria continue to see more of the ball, holding 57 percent possession to Switzerland's 43. The shot count remains close, with Switzerland registering six attempts to Algeria's six, though the Swiss have been the sharper side in front of goal with three shots on target compared to two for Algeria. Riyad Mahrez's side also picked up an additional foul and suffered a fresh injury stoppage early in the second half.
Switzerland, unbeaten in the tournament so far, are closing in on a fifth World Cup Round of 16 appearance in six editions. Algeria, who had shown signs of an second-half comeback bid, now face a much steeper task to salvage their campaign and register their first-ever World Cup knockout win.
