Nearly Tk 500 crore earned on first day of 'The Odyssey'

Hollywood's acclaimed director Christopher Nolan's new film 'The Odyssey' has made a grand opening at the global box office. Based on the Greek epic, the fantasy genre film has earned nearly $40 million worldwide within the first few days of its release, which is approximately Tk 490 crore in Bangladeshi currency.

Despite World Cup matches taking place later this week, the film's remarkable business has surprised box office analysts.

'The Odyssey' earned $17.6 million from previews alone
According to international box office data, the film earned $17.6 million from preview shows in North America alone, setting a record for the highest preview earnings this year. Previously, 'Toy Story Fove' had earned $17.5 million from previews.

Earnings from outside the US
The film has added another $22.2 million to its earnings from 73 markets outside the US. It is being screened on over 25,000 screens across more than 13,300 cinemas worldwide, including China, Japan and South Korea.

The film has also topped various markets in Europe and Oceania, earning nearly $5 million in France, $3.7 million in Australia and $2.5 million in Italy. It has also broken the earning records of Nolan's previous films in Mexico, Germany and Brazil.

'The Odyssey' earnings in Bangladesh and India
Alongside the global market, 'The Odyssey' has also performed exceptionally well on its opening day at the Bangladesh box office. The Christopher Nolan-directed film has recorded the highest opening of the year at multiplexes in Bangladesh. According to BMR reports, the film opened with nearly Tk 38 lakh from the country's Cineplex. On Friday, a total of 49 shows of the film were screened at Star Cineplex, of which 21 shows were houseful and three more were almost full. The average occupancy for the day was 66 percent.

Meanwhile, 'The Odyssey' has also received a tremendous response at the Indian box office. On its opening day, the film's gross collection in India stood at Rs 20.76 crore, which is approximately Tk 29 crore in Bangladeshi currency. The net collection across all languages was Rs 17.40 crore. The film was released in India in four languages: English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The original English version contributed the most, earning Rs 13.75 crore.

Based on Homer's famous ancient Greek epic, 'The Odyssey' has been written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The story revolves around the dangerous and adventurous journey of King Odysseus to return to his kingdom Ithaca after the Trojan War. Matt Damon plays Odysseus in the film, alongside a host of popular stars including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya and Charlize Theron in other important roles.
