Neha Bora released, CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke remains in custody
Delhi Police have shown CJP leader Abhijit Dipke as a "preventive arrest" after he was detained over the "Lehra Do Tiranga" programme at Connaught Place in the Indian capital, New Delhi. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) is an online movement-based platform. Neha Bora, president of the All India Students' Association (AISA), who was detained during the same programme, was released early on Saturday.
According to Delhi Police sources, Abhijit was arrested under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) on apprehension of a breach of the peace. He is due to be produced before a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court later on Saturday.
Neha Bora, meanwhile, who was held under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act, was released after the necessary legal procedures were completed. The CJP, however, has expressed concern over Abhijit's whereabouts and over whether lawyers have been allowed to contact him.
Ratna Singh, head of the party's legal wing, alleged that Abhijit had been kept at an undisclosed location and that lawyers had not yet been able to meet him. In a post on social media platform X, she said that although Abhijit was said to be due before the SEM court, no clear information about his whereabouts was available.
After her release, Neha Bora alleged that protesters are being detained without valid reason and held in custody for hours on end. She claimed such actions are being used to create fear among ordinary people. She called for the immediate release of Abhijit and the other detained protesters.
Neha also said the protesters were taking part in the programme to demand accountability and voting rights. She said there was no justification for detaining them, keeping them at police stations overnight or denying them access to lawyers.
According to the CJP and AISA, Abhijit and Neha were detained on Friday while on their way to take part in the "Lehra Do Tiranga" programme. Both organisations allege that after their detention, they were not allowed to contact lawyers or acquaintances. The CJP claims that contact with Abhijit was cut off after he was taken to an undisclosed location. AISA alleged that Neha had been held alone at the office of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force in Mangolpuri.
