Nepal flood death toll hits 675, over 2,400 still missing

The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 675, five days after the disaster struck areas along the Nepal-Tibet border.

More than 2,400 people remain missing in Nepal, while over 18,700 rescuers continue search operations across the affected areas, according to the latest figures from the country’s disaster management agency.

Difficult terrain and severe damage to roads and communications have hampered rescue efforts.

Preliminary assessments by the US Geological Survey and local officials suggest that a sudden surge of water following a glacial collapse may have triggered the disaster.

Meanwhile, 261 foreign nationals have been rescued from the affected areas, while another 320 remain unaccounted for, the Nepal Tourism Board said.

Across the border in Tibet, 16 people have died and 554 remain missing, according to Chinese state media.

Authorities fear the death toll could rise further as rescue teams continue searching for survivors and those still missing.
