Nepal-like uprising needed in West Bengal: Ex-BJP MP
Former BJP Member of Parliament Arjun Singh has stirred a political storm in West Bengal with his recent remarks suggesting that the state needs a “Nepal-like situation,” referring to a mass uprising against corruption. His comments have triggered sharp criticism, police complaints, and accusations of inciting violence and threatening Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Speaking at a recent event, Singh said, “The way Nepal’s youth have risen against corruption is an example for all. The youth of Bengal should also show such courage. We need a similar public uprising here.”
The remarks were swiftly condemned by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders. State Minister Partha Bhowmik accused Singh of conspiring against the Chief Minister, alleging that Singh's statement was tantamount to issuing a death threat. Multiple complaints have since been lodged by municipal councillors at police stations under the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate.
Despite the legal action, Singh has stood by his words. “I repeat—this corrupt government in Bengal must be overthrown through a public uprising,” he told reporters, refusing to retract his statement.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, without naming Singh directly, responded with a warning. “Some people are trying to fish in troubled waters by taking advantage of unrest in neighbouring countries. There may be attempts to create instability in our state. Everyone must remain alert,” she said.
Meanwhile, BJP state president Shamik Bhattacharya deflected the controversy, aiming criticism back at the Chief Minister. “The border between Nepal and Bangladesh is long. It would be better if the Chief Minister paid attention to that. The demographics in districts bordering Bangladesh are changing rapidly,” he remarked.
The controversy adds fuel to the already charged political climate in West Bengal, with both parties trading barbs over law and order, governance, and regional security.
