India's newly appointed High Commissioner, Dinesh Trivedi, will arrive in Dhaka on Friday, June 12. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the matter.

According to diplomatic analysts, sending a political leader as High Commissioner marks a significant turn in the ongoing diplomatic relations between the two neighbouring countries. Against the backdrop of recent political changes in Bangladesh, regional security challenges and new possibilities for economic cooperation, experts believe that the appointment of an experienced politician like Trivedi could give new momentum to bilateral ties.

Dinesh Trivedi was born on June 4, 1950, in New Delhi. He is now 76 years old. Although of Gujarati descent, he grew up in Kolkata and is deeply connected to Bengali culture. He completed his Bachelor's in Commerce from St Xavier's College, Kolkata, and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin.

His political career is highly diverse. He began with Congress, then moved to Janata Dal, then to Trinamool Congress before joining the BJP in 2021. He has been elected as a member of parliament from West Bengal multiple times — twice to the Rajya Sabha (1990-96 and 2002-08) and once to the Lok Sabha from Barrackpore (2009-2019). In Manmohan Singh's cabinet, he served as Railway Minister and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. In 2016-17, he received the 'Outstanding Parliamentarian' award.

In April, the Indian government announced the appointment of Dinesh Trivedi as the new High Commissioner to Bangladesh. He will succeed career diplomat Pranay Kumar Verma. Although career diplomats are usually sent to diplomatic posts, the Modi government has chosen an experienced politician in the current sensitive situation. Analysts say Trivedi is fluent in Bengali and possesses deep knowledge of West Bengal's politics and culture, which is why the Modi government is sending him to Dhaka in the current political context.
