New York names two streets after Pele, Thierry Henry to honour football legends

The city of New York has temporarily renamed two streets to honour football legends Pele and Thierry Henry as a tribute to hosting the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

According to a Xinhua report, the intersection of West 55th Street and Sixth Avenue near Rockefeller Center in Manhattan has been unveiled as 'Thierry Henry Way'. The French football star appeared via video call at the ceremony and described the honour as "unbelievable".

Meanwhile, the intersection of Shea Road and Meridian Road in the Queens borough has been renamed 'Pele Way' in honour of the Brazilian legend.

Henry, who was part of France's 1998 World Cup-winning team and gained fame playing for Arsenal and Barcelona, finished his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer.
