New Zealand to play against Iran despite alternative venue for World Cup
New Zealand are set to play their opening FIFA World Cup group stage match against Iran, even amid geopolitical tensions that could force a venue change. The uncertainty arises from the recent US–Israel–Iran conflict, which has cast doubt over Iran’s scheduled matches in the United States.
Iran secured qualification for the tournament, with their first group game set against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles. However, the Iranian Football Federation has threatened to boycott matches in the U.S., prompting contingency planning.
Midfielder Ryan Thomas confirmed the squad is ready to follow the schedule, stating: “Iran earned their place in the World Cup. If we have to play in Mexico or Canada instead, we will do so. I have no problem with that.”
The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19, with New Zealand’s base in San Diego, California, near the Mexican border. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has offered her country as an alternative venue if needed, though FIFA will make the final decision.
Winger Costa Barbarouses emphasized that a venue change would not affect the team’s preparations: “The authorities will decide, but our training and base are set, so I don’t see any issues before the first match.”
Iran’s remaining group matches are also scheduled in the US: against Belgium in Los Angeles and Egypt in Seattle. FIFA has not issued an official comment on a potential venue switch but continues to coordinate with the Iranian Football Federation.
Safety concerns around the Los Angeles fixture were acknowledged, but Barbarouses expressed confidence in the organizers: “I trust the tournament will provide proper security. I want my family to be there safely, and I believe they will be.”
After missing out since 2010, this marks New Zealand’s return to the World Cup, and Thomas believes the team can handle the added pressure: “Naturally there’s pressure before the first match, but we are confident we can manage it on the field.”
