At least nine people were killed and 25 others injured in a shooting at Tumblar Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence in northeastern British Columbia, Canadian authorities said.

Police said the incident began around 1:20pm (local time) on Tuesday (February 10), reports CNN.

Officers arriving at the school found six dead and several injured; one critically wounded person later died en route to the hospital.

The suspected shooter was found dead at the scene, with preliminary reports suggesting suicide.

Two seriously injured victims were airlifted to hospital, while at least 25 others received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at local medical centers.

Authorities also discovered two bodies at a nearby residence and are searching the area to determine if others were involved or injured.

Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public. A shelter-in-place advisory issued earlier was lifted at 5:45pm.

The school, which serves 175 students from grades seven to twelve, and the nearby elementary school will remain closed for the rest of the week.
