No bar for Awami League to join local polls if they meet conditions: Dr. Zahed

Awami League leaders and activists will be able to participate in the next local government elections if they can meet the election-related conditions, said Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman.

He said this in response to questions from journalists at a regular press conference organized by the Directorate of Information at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

Responding to a question about whether Awami League leaders and activists will have the opportunity to participate in the local government elections, Zahed Ur Rahman said, since the elections are non-partisan, if someone wants to vote as an individual and meets the necessary conditions, there is no problem in their participation.

He said, if a person wants to participate in the elections and can meet the conditions set for conducting the elections, then he can definitely vote. There is no reason for the government to stop him.

However, he clarified, "If a candidate in a non-partisan election brings forward the political identity or party activities of the Awami League in the election campaign, it can be considered a problem."

In response to a question about whether Awami League office-bearers will be able to participate in the election, the adviser said that although the organizational activities of the Awami League are currently banned, the party is not banned. As a result, the party title cannot be used, but there is no obstacle to participation if the legal conditions are met in the election as an individual.

Zahed Ur Rahman said that the organization's programs are banned, the organization is not banned. Since the programs are banned, the positions and titles cannot be used. But if someone meets the specified conditions as an individual, he can vote.

He also spoke about the various ongoing activities of the government and contemporary issues at the press conference.
