Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, reacting on US attempt to detain Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, has said that Beijing will not accept any country taking it upon itself to act as the “world’s judge.”

Speaking on Sunday (January 4) during a meeting with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Beijing, Wang referred to the “sudden situation in Venezuela” without directly naming the United States. He stated, “We do not believe that any country can act as the world’s police, nor do we accept that any country can claim to be the judge of the world.”

Wang also emphasized that under international law, the sovereignty and security of all countries must be fully protected. This was China’s first formal comment after images emerged of the 63-year-old Maduro blindfolded and handcuffed, which stunned the Venezuelan public last Saturday.

Maduro is currently held at a detention centre in New York and is expected to appear in court on Monday over drug-related charges.
