No hike in bidi price in next budget: Finance Minister

The government has decided to keep the price and tax rate on bidis unchanged in the upcoming fiscal year's budget, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has informed parliament.

He made the statement on Tuesday, June 9, while responding to a question from Women's Seat-3 MP Rasheda Begum Heera during the question-answer session of the third day of the budget session.

Heera had asked whether additional supplementary duty would be imposed on tobacco products, keeping the 15 per cent value-added tax and 1 per cent health development surcharge on the retail price of bidis.

The finance minister replied that the government has decided to keep the price and tax rate on bidis unchanged from the previous year, meaning the price of bidis will not increase next fiscal year.
