China has weighed in on the deadly nationwide protests that have rocked Iran, its diplomatic and economic ally, with an apparent critique of the United States.

“We consistently oppose interference in other countries’ internal affairs,” China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing Monday.

“The sovereignty and security of all countries should be fully protected by international law,” the ministry spokesperson said, adding that China opposes “the use of force or the threat of force in international relations.”
