No person can contest more than 3 seats: Notification
A person cannot contest in more than three parliamentary constituencies. If someone submits nomination papers for more than three seats, all will be cancelled. In addition, to contest for a parliamentary seat, a candidate must resign from the mayor-chairman post or any other lucrative position.
The Election Commission (EC) issued a notification with this information on Friday, December 12.
The EC stated that candidates cannot contest while holding the positions of chairman of Upazila Parishad, District Council, or Union Parishad, or mayor of city corporations and municipalities. They must resign from these posts. Similarly, employees of various government autonomous, semi-autonomous, and government-funded offices or corporations, statutory bodies, authorities, and Bangladesh missions abroad with contractual appointments must resign systematically to contest in the national parliamentary elections.
Contesting multiple seats
According to Section 13(a) of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, no person can contest more than three constituencies at the same time. If a person contests in more than three constituencies simultaneously, all nomination papers will be cancelled for all constituencies.
Bank account for election expenditure
Under Section 44(b) of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, each election agent or, if no agent is appointed, the candidate themselves must open a separate bank account in a scheduled bank for election expenditure (excluding personal expenses). All election-related expenses must be paid from this account. According to Rule 29 of the Election Management Rules, 2025, a candidate must submit a statement of possible sources of funds (Form-20) and details of assets, liabilities, and annual expenditure (Form-21) along with the nomination papers.
