After scripting history by reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time, Cape Verde are refusing to be overawed by the challenge of facing defending champions Argentina.

Head coach Bubista insists his side will approach the Round of 32 clash with confidence, declaring that "nothing is impossible in football."

The African island nation stunned the football world by progressing from one of the tournament's toughest groups, holding both Spain and Uruguay before sealing a historic place in the knockout phase as runners-up. Now, the tournament's smallest nation by population still standing faces its biggest test yet against Lionel Messi's Argentina.

Speaking after the matchup was confirmed, Bubista said his players are relishing the opportunity rather than fearing it.

"First of all, we are proud to play against Argentina. Our countries share long-standing ties, but regardless of the opponent, we want to stay true to our identity. We know Argentina have world-class players, including Lionel Messi, but we will play with responsibility and confidence in our own game," he said.

Cape Verde's remarkable run has already become one of the tournament's standout stories, and Bubista believes it sends a powerful message to smaller footballing nations around the world.

"I didn't know we would become the smallest country ever to reach this stage. That only proves that small nations can dream big if they have belief, unity and commitment. We are representing not only Cape Verde but also Africa and every small nation that dares to dream," he added.

The 56-year-old coach said he has long believed Cape Verde had the potential to compete on football's biggest stage.

"I always believed this moment would come. It has taken years of hard work, discipline and sacrifice. My players have shown tremendous mental strength, and when those qualities come together, achievements like this become possible."

That confidence has spread throughout the squad.

Midfielder Deroy Duarte, who was named Player of the Match against Saudi Arabia, said the team would celebrate their historic qualification before turning their full attention to Argentina.

"It will be a very difficult match, but football has taught us that anything is possible. We believe in ourselves," Duarte said.

Cape Verde will face reigning world champions Argentina in the Round of 32 on July 3 in Miami, with the tournament's biggest underdogs hoping to extend one of the World Cup's most captivating fairytale runs.
