Oil tanker attacked in Strait of Hormuz amid US-Iran tensions
An oil tanker has been attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on Saturday, June 27, as tensions between the US and Iran continue to escalate.
The captain of the tanker reported that an unknown object struck the vessel's command centre. All crew members are safe, and no environmental damage has been reported, according to the captain.
Authorities are investigating the incident, UKMTO said.
The attack comes amid a series of retaliatory strikes between the US and Iran. On Friday, the US struck several locations in Iran following an Iranian drone attack on a cargo vessel off the coast of Oman. Iran then launched counter-strikes against US infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Bahrain reported that Iran carried out a drone attack on its territory on Saturday morning. Bahrain's foreign ministry condemned the attack, calling it a violation of its territorial integrity and international law. The ministry said Iran used several drones in the attack but did not specify the targets.
The attack threatened the lives of civilians and undermined efforts to ease tensions in the region, Bahrain's foreign ministry said.
