Infertility rates among men and women are rising globally, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that currently, one in six people experiences infertility.

On Friday (Novemer 28), WHO released its first-ever global guideline on infertility prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, highlighting the current prevalence of infertility worldwide.

The guideline attributed Unhealthy lifestyles, poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, and smoking were identified as major contributing factors.

Additionally, member states have been urged to strengthen support for affected individuals.

Apart from these, the guideline contained 40 more specific recommendations to improve prevention and treatment.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described infertility as “one of the most neglected public health challenges and a critical issue for global equity.”

He noted that millions suffer from infertility, yet many countries lack adequate government-supported care, forcing patients to pay out of pocket, which makes treatment largely inaccessible for the poor.

He added that stigma, social pressure, and economic constraints prevent many from receiving proper care.

WHO calls on all member states to increase investment in infertility prevention and treatment, provide mental health support, and expand awareness and data collection.
