At least one person was killed and four others injured after a shooting incident on two interstate highways in Kansas City, authorities said, in an attack involving an Uber carrying Argentina football supporters.

According to police, the victims included an Uber driver transporting a group of fans heading to watch a FIFA World Cup match between Argentina and Algeria on Tuesday evening. The driver was among those injured.

A passenger told Argentine media outlet La Nación that the vehicle was struck by gunfire from a passing car while travelling. The driver was hit in the leg, forcing the vehicle to stop before the occupants realized he had been seriously wounded, after which emergency services were called.

Reuters reported that the shooting occurred between 6:00pm and 6:30pm (local time) across multiple locations along Interstate 670 and Interstate 70.

Authorities have clarified that the incident has no link to the World Cup tournament or the match itself.

Police have identified a suspect as 22-year-old Oscar Sanchez-Muniz, who is described as armed and dangerous. A manhunt is underway, with officers also searching a residence in Independence, Missouri, which later caught fire during the operation. No one was found inside the property.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said law enforcement agencies are pursuing all leads to bring the suspect into custody as quickly as possible.

The shooting comes just days after another incident near a World Cup base camp in Kansas City left nine people injured, raising fresh concerns over public safety in the area during the tournament.
