One killed in shooting near Mexico's Presidential Palace

A man was killed and two others were injured in a shooting near Mexico's Presidential Palace and the historic Zócalo public square in Mexico City, authorities said. The attack took place on Monday local time.

According to Mexico City's Secretariat of Citizen Security, the incident appeared to be a targeted attack. A 42-year-old man died at the scene, while two 39-year-old men sustained gunshot wounds.

Authorities said the gunman fled the scene on a motorcycle immediately after opening fire. Law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into the incident.

Police said the shooting occurred in Santo Domingo Square, a colonial-era district in the historic centre of the capital. The area has long been known as a hub for criminal networks involved in producing forged and fraudulent documents.

Although deadly shootings linked to drug trafficking groups are common in many parts of Mexico, attacks in the heart of the capital—particularly so close to the Presidential Palace—are relatively rare. However, Mexico City continues to face security challenges due to the presence of regional criminal gangs such as Unión Tepito and Fuerza Anti-Unión, which have fuelled persistent concerns over organised crime in the city.
