One more die in Mexico City as WC match win celebrations turn tragic, total 4
The death toll from Mexico's World Cup (WC) match win celebrations rose to four, health authorities in Mexico City confirmed Wednesday (July 1).
Officials disclosed new details on the circumstances of each fatality following Tuesday night's street celebrations that drew an estimated 14 lakh people to the capital.
The Mexico City Public Health Secretariat said three of the four victims died of asphyxiation, identifying them as two women, aged 19 and 48, and a 44-year-old man.
The fourth victim, a 30-year-old man, succumbed to cardiorespiratory arrest Wednesday after being hospitalised earlier in the day with an epileptic seizure and gastrointestinal bleeding, authorities added.
The updated toll comes after Mexico's 2-0 win over Ecuador sent crowds pouring into the streets late Tuesday, with most fans converging on the Angel of Independence monument.
Authorities said 1,615 people required medical attention during the celebrations, with dozens hospitalised, figures that have not changed materially since Tuesday's initial reports.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada, addressing the rising toll at a news conference, extended condolences to the victims' families and pledged the administration's continued support through the investigation. "On behalf of the Mexico City government and on my own behalf, we express our deepest sorrow over the deaths of the people who lost their lives yesterday during the celebrations at the Angel of Independence," she said, adding that families would receive "all the human and institutional support they may require."
The capital's toll adds to an earlier fatality reported in the northwestern state of Baja California, where a 44-year-old man was killed Tuesday after his vehicle struck a supporter while a group of fans was rocking the truck. He was allegedly beaten to death by the crowd, bringing the combined nationwide toll from World Cup celebrations to five.
Authorities have not indicated whether further deaths or injuries linked to the celebrations are expected to be reported.
